With a history dating back to its first climb in 1906 (Lauren Run, PA), many including road racing icons like Carroll Shelby, Roger Penske and Oscar Koveleski have tried to straighten the 6-turns, including the 110-degree "Devil's Elbow." And not all smoke is from the tires as this was coal mining territory and possibly an underground fire or two is still venting to the atmosphere.
