With a history dating back to its first climb in 1906 (Lauren Run, PA), many including road racing icons like Carroll Shelby, Roger Penske and Oscar Koveleski have tried to straighten the 6-turns, including the 110-degree "Devil's Elbow." And not all smoke is from the tires as this was coal mining territory and possibly an underground fire or two is still venting to the atmosphere. For more info see
