Pahoehoe Lava Flows

Covered by Pahoehoe lava flows (Pahoehoe which means in Polynesian language “easy to walk”), is a unique type of lava that is rare to the rest of the world and of great geological interest. Located southeast of Santiago Island, the solidified lava in corrugated or accordion shapes were formed in 1897, making it geographically very young. The landscape was created when the the movement of underground lava over the flat surface magna, the rapid cooling and other eruptions led to the break in many places creating the natural "artwork" we hiked on.
