Racing ran through and around the hamlet of Watkins Glen in 1948 as eight drivers took the green flag, and road racing in America was born. After five years, races moved up the hill using another layout utilizing public roads. Safety concerns ended that and in 1956 the purpose-built Watkins Glen track was used from that point forward.
