COLE PALEN'S OLD RHINEBECK AERODROME
Inspired by the Shuttleworth Collection of aircraft and automobiles, Cole Palen created the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome living museum in Red Hook, New York. Breaking ground in 1958 and opening in 1966, the aerodrome not only features numerous aircraft from the Pioneer Era, World War I and the Golden Age (1919-1939) of flight, but also displays a host of automobiles and memorabilia reflecting the time of the birth of the flying machine. Additionally, the living museum puts on two airshows, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, demonstrating the surprising agility of the engineering of these nearly century-old aircraft. Noteworthy, Palen was not only an enthusiast and accomplished pilot, but flew many of the aircraft during the weekend shows.
