Widely regarded as finest all-around piston-engine fighter of World War II, the P-51 or Mustang is a single-seat long-range high-altitude aircraft built by North American Aviation was also used in the Korean conflict as well. Due to its success as a fighter and fighter bomber, the P-51 flew many missions as the fighter escort for the heavy bomber formations flying far into German (Berlin). The most famous and successful P-51 escort group (332nd Fighter Group) were the "Red Tail," made up of African Americans known as the Tuskegee Airman. With a top speed of 430+ miles per hour, the P-51 is not only fast as a mustang, ready for battle with six .50 caliber machine guns, 2000 pounds of bombs and 10 5-inch rockets, but just a beautiful example of American aircraft design and function.
