Originally built in 810, rebuilt in 1340, the Venetian Gothic style structure is one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice. Constructed for the residence of the Doge of Venice, the elected authority of the former Republic of Venice, the buildings also served as government offices, housed even a jail, and a museum since 1923.
