HAWAIIAN GREEN SEA TURTLES at POIPU BEACH
Chelonia mydas
Known locally as honu, the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are a distinct population of the global green sea turtle species. They are genetically isolated, nesting almost exclusively in the French Frigate Shoals rather than mixing with other Pacific populations. They are also unique for their documented, frequent behavior of "basking" (resting) on Hawaiian beaches, as seen here at Poipu Beach.
