Sandwiched between Columbia, Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, and the Pacific Ocean to its south and west, this South American Peruvian Territory was home to several cultures and civilizations during the ancient and medieval periods. They included the Caral-Supe civilization (earliest civilization in the Americas), the Nazca culture, the Wari and Tiwanaku empires, the Kingdom of Cusco and Inca Empire. Before the Spanish Empire conquered the region, the Inca Empire was the largest known state in the Pre-Columbian Americas.
Gaining independence in 1824 behind the military campaigns of Jose de San Martin and Simon Bolivar, today's Peru is a sovereign state divided into 25 regions (2023). And while Spanish is the main language spoken in Peru, there is a large number of Peruvians who speak Quechuan languages, Aymara, and other indigenous languages. So sit back and enjoy a small sampling of images captured during our short visit to the third largest country in South America (2023) and Machu Picchu and other significant historical sites.
