Opened 1899, the City of New York alloted 250 acres to the New York Zoological Society to preserve native species and promote Zoology. And like many other premier parks, the Bronx Zoo has been evolving into a cage-free zoo since 1940. Interestedly, the Bronx Zoo is also home to several city landmarks.
